Unless that Starbucks east of the "Burg" in the Peebles Shopping Center is selling a lot of coffee early in the morning or late at night, there aren't many people buying that $4.00 cup of coffee along with the $3.00 pastry. This is a dollar for any size coffee at McDonalds community, but the Starbucks might be figuring it out soon. Besides McDonalds coffee is better than Starbucks.

Sounds like Willie found one of their few customers... Like I stated on this forum awhile back when I found out through here they were opening, I wondered about the longevity of it. They weren't open long on the Golden Mile in Hanover. I can't foresee anything long term here in Gettysburg. I hope I'm wrong.

Starbucks did close their store on Eisenhower Drive, however, their original store in South Hanover, on PA 94, is still open after several years and seems to be doing well. My guess is the Eisenhower location just didn't work for that type of business. Verizon took over the building.

I had to go to Staples last Wednesday. It was the middle of the afternoon and I was surprised at the number of customers at Starbucks at that time of day. I will get Starbucks on occasion but I gotta agree with Willie, in my opinion McDonald's coffee tastes better!

My guess is the Eisenhower location just didn't work for that type of business. Verizon took over the building. Buckey, It looks like Starbucks has done the same thing at this location. They've basically painted themselves into a corner! They have located themselves in a relatively inaccessible section of a marginally busy shopping center. The back of the store is facing Route 30! Not necessarily the best advertisement, and not too inviting - and I think I'll blame Straban for that. If you can't stop in for a quick luxury item like Starbucks, then that will kill your chances considerably. Regardless of the relative quality of the products, if you can get a quick, tasty drive-thru cup of coffee - then convenience will often trump quality. If you want the ambiance of a coffee shop, then you won't be sitting in McD' sipping your java.

Having moved out of state before the McD's on Steinwehr was remodeled, I can't speak for the current clientele but Venter's comment about the coffee shop ambiance made me chuckle. Mid-mornings at that place always reminded me of a waiting room at a physician's office who specialized in geriatric patients. I rarely went there, usually only after tests at the hospital or an appointment in the medical building. Concur on their coffee, esp. @ $0.49 a cup for seniors. Haven't paid for a hyper-priced Starbucks in at least a decade.

Dunkin donuts here have taken a negative turn, in my opinion. Most people would disagree, I guess, but most people aren't as cheap as I am. 10 years ago, here in town (Pittsburgh) there was an old style dunkin donuts (you know, all brown, locked bathroom with a coin op on it, etc, older employees, foreign owners, but big donuts for a good price).
There was another dunkin donuts on my way to work, kind of standard no frills but same story, the donuts were big.
They did a rebranding push or something about 5 or 6 years ago, the old style dunkin donuts was shut down, the one along my way to work shut down before that and they built a shiny new building right in market square down here, which would be like the gettysburg square if the square was more business focused. Except there's 10 places like that downtown here.
Anyway, everything instantly increased in price 20 percent or so and three donuts now aren't as big as two donuts before, and they don't taste as good. But there is a lot more advertising. So I guess that's where the money went. Out of the product, into the advertising and into a more expensive area.
I don't like their rebranding philosophy so much. Coffee doesn't taste the same as it did 15 years ago, either, their supplier must be different. It's not as good. Wonder if they found a cheaper source. There are no fewer than 20 places for me to get coffee in a 200 yard walk between where my bus drops me off and where my office is, so they'd have to be a whole lot better for me to use. The coffee in our building is spectacular, not burnt or acidic like starbucks, but the price is about the same as starbucks. It's the best coffee I've ever had, and I'd put starbucks, with their intention to make their coffee acidic and different, in the bottom 25%. Black no sugar, always. Really lets you know which coffee is good and which is just baked horse pee.

Baked horse pee? My daughter worked for Dunkin for a few weeks. There is no longer a man in the back making donuts. They are trucked in, and when they're out, there is no more "... let me check in back to see when they'll be done!" The chocolate in the donuts began tasting like reconstituted Cocoa Puffs. I know this is about coffee, but since I don't drink it, and someone mentioned donuts - I'll speak about what I know best

About the closest I have found is at Giant - and even they are too small. The ones at the local ShopRite in NJ was at least 40% bigger and tasted like fresh ingredients. And don't get me started on real Italian bread ( although Costco is close, damn close - thank you Venter. And no, I'm not moving back to NJ. - You are all stuck with me. Oh, and while I'm up on this soapbox, would somebody please open a real carwash!?

That pretty much explains the change and why they don't taste like donuts that are fresh.
Of course when they start making those donuts in some processing center, they start looking too close at their pennies about how much wheat and sugar they're using, and they lose loyal customers. They can stick it, now that I know they're operating that way I won't ever go back into them.
They were so much bigger, crisper and fresher when they were made in the stores, and the flavored donuts like the buttercrunch actually had a lot of topping on them and they were fantastic. They suck now, all of the cake donuts have the texture a balled wet sock.
It irritates me when these places go to a situation where they want 100% process control over every single location in the entire world. It's never a change for the better, and it makes them totally uninteresting. They should understand in the marketing area that those mornings that you go in and the donuts have a little extra crunch or they're a little bit bigger, those are the days that keep you coming back. When they are a small ring of robotically produced penny-pinched flacid wet socks, then why bother even going in?

And I only eat them once in a blue moon. Can't stand all those fancy, schmancy kinds. Kennies are the best, IMO, but Giant and Weis aren't bad either.

Lifesaver - I'm in agreement. the fresh stuff at a grocery store is better. As a donut pig, I'd say half of the grocery stores make great donuts, and once you find one that does, they're probably the place to go. Same is true out here, you get better donuts at the grocery store bakeries. You just have to get to the store in time to get them.
They have good fresh bagels cheap, too, compared to the high dollar specialty bagel shops.

It been a while since I've graced the hallowed halls (Hallo, halls.) of this board.
Just a reminder about Dunkin Donuts - retired cops still get free coffee at D&D, as do all active military.
Drink up, my friends. It always tastes better when its free.

I see that Starbucks has a large logo on their back wall now (fronting Route 30), and "Drive Thru" under that. It still looks kind of uninviting from the main road though. Another Straban limitation, I'm sure.
