Wow!
That is what I have to say about the meals we just ate on Sunday at LaFonte in New Oxford.
Just before you get to the Square at New Oxford, on the right, is a rather unassuming restaurant.
We were headed to Hanover, and were thinking about eating at Olive Garden.
I like OG for a decent meal, but on the way out, we thought "What the hell"!
When we walked into LaFonte, we weren't quite sure it was what we were looking for, but decided to go for it.
The decor is "Meh!" and the ambiance is "Eh!".
You walk past the Bar to get to your tables - not the best first impression, but we ventured ahead.
So here goes...
The owner's daughter, Eleanora, greeted us from the back of an empty restaurant, except for 2 locals at the bar (at about 5:00).
We sat down at our table, and looked around... still wondering if we made the right choice.
A minute later, another couple comes in.
All of a sudden, out of the Kitchen comes Luisa, the Owner, and Cook.
An extremely animated Old-Country Italian Woman, who reminded me of ANY of my Aunts and my Mom and Grandmom.
She greets us, introduces herself, and informs us that she is the only cook in the kitchen!
We get our menus, and start salivating.
I decide on a Shrimp and Scallop Alfredo on Linguine (instead of the Penne).
Debi decides on the Veal Parmesan.
And then... out comes Luisa with a carry-out order of Crab Cakes.
That was cruel!
Those things smelled so good, and they were HUGE!
But we came for Italian.
Soooo....
We decided to Order the Crab Cakes TOO!
Three Meals, two people
So after I've explained all of this to you guys, there is NO WAY to actually explain to you how tremendous the food was!
I'm not kidding, it was some of the BEST Italian Food I've ever eaten (umm, besides my Grandmother's, Mom's, and Debi's of course )
The Alfredo Sauce was so creamy, smooth, and tasty.
The Shrimp were fresh, and the Scallops didn't have that "bitter taste" that they tend to have sometimes.
Hands down, the BEST Alfredo I've EVER eaten (and I can safely say that because Mom, etc. never made Alfredo, only the Tomato Sauce.)
Debi's Veal was REAL, fresh (not a frozen patty), and Fork-Cutting-Tender.
The Tomato Sauce was quite good too.
Oh yeah... the Crab Cakes... holy moley.
TWO cakes, Packed full of Lump Crabmeat, each about the size of a slightly-squished baseball.
And the taste... Oh My God!
I know what you're thinking:
A) These guys must have been starving (not really, we had a good lunch)
B) These guys are pigs. (I'll leave that assessment alone for now)
C) These guys are rich (We were celebrating a successful Yard Sale, and the 3 meals tallied only about $115 with drinks and tip)
Of course, I had to ask which part of Italy they were from.
Surprise! They were from my Grandfather's hometown of Calabria, in Southern Italy.
Must have been fate!
We waddled out of there with left-overs enough for another Lunch AND Dinner for two (the portions were quite substantial).
So once again, I'll just end by saying -
Wow!
