Here I sit on my porch that backs up to the alley behind the Garryowen; it is 1:38 am and I have speakers facing the back with music playing and premixed organic fertilizer sitting (probably going bad).... Do you know why? The fertilizer is for the garden, mixed two hours ago with the plan to quickly spray.... The music is to keep the SKUNKS (see that PLURAL who are yet again walking down the small walkway between homes from Middle Street) in the know that I am here so I do not get sprayed. THIS IS CRAZY- and becoming a DAILY ISSUE. One of these skunks is the size of a small bear; he just walks on in the yard, eating all our beans, and reserving us to the porch or inside until he decides to leave....i have made calls... nothing... this is an issue- and I pity the borough worker who gets the wrath when one of my kids are sprayed or hurt (do skunks attack? lol... I hope not to find out)... -Skunked in the Boro

When I first spotted this thread's title, I thought it might be a rant about either the commissioners or the Gettysburg Borough council. How disappointing to find out that it was about four-legged skunks. I hope the new BVer can find some relief from his infestation. Welcome aboard.

disappointing- but kept you on the edge of your seat wanting to know who I was playing music for Thanks for the welcome ! on an additional note: THE SKUNKS DUG UP MY CABBAGE..... these horrid little creatures who got the short stick when it comes to natural defense mechanisms (this is true. ask Peppe le Peu) are garbage scavengers.... they typically are not big fans of having to do the work.... Now. I am assuming they are here on this block due to the indescribable amount of trash and filth they could get into living at 129 W. Middle, which now has signs posted that the home is unlivable??.... Now that the prior tenants are moved and most- NOT ALL- of the trash, junk and misc garbage has been taken away, the Skunks are now forced to fend for themselves....and this is the reason that with in the last two weeks they are eating all the vegetables in our gardens....PLEASE TRAP AND GET THESE SKUNKS TO THE COUNTRY!!!!!

I recall reading that Skunks don't like strong smells... they don't even like their OWN Smell! Try perfume and maybe mothballs? I'd rather smell the skunk than mothballs - I have lots of trouble getting my nose between their little legs Anyway, I have a trap you can use to trap it humanely. Getting rid of it afterwards is up to you though I've also read that if they can't lift their tail (to spray over their heads), then they won't spray, and they won't spray in enclosed areas that they are stuck in (see above; they dislike their own smell) Since you often see skunks in the middle of the road, I assume they are trying to camouflage themselves on the white striped asphalt. Evidently, they also have strong suicidal tendencies Of course, I wouldn't try these methods myself, just let us know if they work. Clean the trap afterwards!

BTW, Don't bring them to the country! There is a nice empty field at the end of the road, just a few blocks past the Borough Park

Not be sound like a jerk, OK not a big jerk, but when did it become the boro's responsibility to care of the skunks? Deal with the problems you have on your property. Right?

Did you try giving the PA Game Commission a call? I don't know if they will handle the problem but can possibly put you in contact with people who can.

High. Maybe they are living in the brushy area around the Tiber, although I walk in that area lots of mornings and don't see or smell any evidence then. Try calling the borough office, give them your name and register your complaint. Then ask what you can do or what the borough can do to help remedy the situation. I think target practice would be considered a definite NO. You could try lining the perimeter of your garden with mothballs in the meantime. Come to think of it I live in the mountains and very rarely do I smell skunk where I live. Groundhogs and deer are our garden pests. And skunks aren't known to attack unless they are rabid. And that's not out of the realm of possibility. If you see one acting aggressive or strangely, or see one out in the light of day be careful.

Just paint a white line down the middle of the blacktop... he'll be gone in no time!
