From Tuesday's Around Town by Fred Snyder:
Local Eagles soar and save Gettysburg's parades
Tuesday, October 1, 2013 11:41 am
Two events that bond local citizens in our community are the Gettysburg Halloween and Christmas parades. Christmas came early for Gettysburg late last week when Stephanie McIlwee received a call from Michelle Slaybaugh, manager of the Gettysburg Eagles. Steph, who is senior project manager for Pennsylvania Interfaith Community Programs in Gettysburg, has been the driving force in seeking funding, registering participants, and planning entertainment for the parades for years. Michelle called to let Stephanie know the Gettysburg Eagles Aerie 1562 has decided to fund both the Halloween and Christmas parades this year and all future parades. The cost of each parade with permits and prize money varies, with the Halloween Parade costing about $6,500, and the Christmas Parade $4,500. The Gettysburg Eagles will provide full funding of this year's Christmas parade and both parades going into the future. Steph did want to acknowledge those who have already donated for this year's Halloween Parade, like Battlefield Harley Davidson, a longtime sponsor, Farnsworth House, Hockley & O'Donnell, ACNB Bank, Blue Parrot Bistro, Codori Memorials, Herff Jones, CVB, M/M Dietz and Dave Sites. Gettysburg Eagles will cover the difference for this year's Halloween Parade, and assume full sponsorship of both parades from this point forward. A commitment previously made by the Convention and Visitors Bureau of $1,000 for this year's Christmas Parade will be spent on advertising for the event. Thank you to the Gettysburg Eagles for their kind and generous donations in ensuring these major community events continue into the future.
