Today was "suppose" to be the pickup from the new garbage vendor IESI that Gettysburg Borough has chosen. However, it is now almost 8:00 pm and South Fourth Street has NOT been picked up yet. Recycables are blowing around everywhere and with the wind blowing as hard as it is, I'm sure by the time morning comes around this street will be a mess.
Anyone know anything about what's going on? The IESI website just states that pickup was suppose to begin tonight but doesn't say anything about delays. We never had this problem with Waste Management......

I was always pleased with the IESI Service out here in Cumberland Twp., so I imagine you'll find that IESI does a good job. Now we have Advanced Disposal, and I don't have my trash container from them yet. I think they are ALL overwhelmed with the transformations. Advanced claims that IESI didn't share their customer list Hey, can you blame them? You cancel MY services, and you want me to GIVE away MY Client List? I think the Township should always have the List in its database so this won't happen again. After all, they are the ones who make the contract with the hauler. We got a Postcard from Advanced, but we were not aware that we still had to contact them for service. If they have my address, then they know I'm a customer - yes?

Advanced showed up here sometime on the 4th. It was as I expected - recycling lying in the snow, trash can lid thrown to one side, etc. This week I'm taking only the trash bag to the curb.
Mom is back in critical care (third hospital stay since 12/13) and I'm ready for a fight. IESI (liked them), Advanced (no opinion) Cumberland Township jackasses (meh) - I'm in the mood to take on the entire bunch.
On a funny (not for my neighbors) note, apparently they didn't receive mail notice and don't read the newspaper. Their trash is out for IESI pickup. OOOOPS. Not gonna happen. Yeah, I could call them but I'm sick and I have to mask up to go see Mom. Don't feel like being nice to the neighbors.

How is it that any town can tell you who you must get your trash removed from ?

They do it out here in western pa, too, and I'm not even in a boro - just a township. Trash removal is a mandatory purchase and the township chooses a carrier. Our houses are close enough together that if they didn't make purchase mandatory, people would double up, etc, and put their garbage together.
Not sure what happens if you don't purchase pickup, though. Let's say you had a business and a dumpster, what would happen if you took your personal trash to the dumpster? no clue.

How is it that any town can tell you who you must get your trash removed from ? You know what it's like to be behind ONE Garbage Truck. Can you imagine if we were all able to choose our own Trash Hauler? Plus, I'm sure it would cost you a lot more in the long run. It's just not efficient enough, or profitable enough, for a hauler to send a truck out for just a few clients.

We got the wheeled cart and "free recycling cart" (nice too because it is wheeled) and they recycle a lot more than our previous hauler Parks. I liked Parks, they are focused on customer service. I contacted them once with a small problem I had with my service and guess what? I never had that problem again! Unfortunately the Park's quote came in more than Advanced (but not by much), but by law the township must go with the lowest bid. An advantage to renting the cart provided by Advanced is that if it is stolen (and YES it did happen to me with a previous hauler) they will provide you with a new one after you file a police report. If you notice, there is a number on the cart. That number is registered to your name. When we got the letter about the new hauler we priced buying our own bin and it would have cost about $90 at Lowe's for the size we use. That's a lot of months of 1.50 rental. Decided that rental was the best option for us. BTW, Parks still hasn't picked up our old cart and recycling container.

To my knowledge you are not obligated to purchase trash collection in Adams County. Adams Rescue Mission will take recyclables, and I know we are allowed to burn in our township, which cuts down on our trash considerably. I'm sure there are people in the county that "double up" and share trash collection bills. However, it is illegal to put your trash in someone else's dumpster, and I recently saw that someone was fined for doing just that.

The Townships actually have a way to go with a higher bidder if they want but they have to reject the bids and put them out for rebidding and then reject those bids for not being cheap enough, not enough bids coming in and reasons like that. Most Townships just except the first bids because it is easier.

I have a relative who lives out of town who at one point was putting all of his non-burnable trash in his dumpster (which was in hanover). We can't burn here, I wish we could. My parents still burn, and live fairly close to the mission, so it's ideal for them. They buy bags for a couple of bucks per to throw away things that shouldn't be burned and can't be recycled, and probably put out a bag a month or something like that.

I would think if you were paying for the dumpster at your business you would certainly be able to use it for your personal trash as well. The charge for using someone else's dumpster is theft of services. You wouldn't be stealing anything you are already paying for!

This summer, the house across the street from us was rebuilt. It burned last year on new year's eve.
There was a large dumpster parked right in the middle of our street for months (changed as it got full each time, of course). I had to remind my wife several times not to dump any of our stuff in it, especially plant offcuts, because it would be very easy to guess where random junk was coming from.
I cut about 200 pounds of branches and leaves off of our front yard tree, which is a unique type with unique leaves, and she kept insisting that "we should put it all in the dumpster because we've had it half blocking our driveway all summmer". I'm sure a judge would love that argument. I'm still not sure why they were allowed to park the dumpster in the middle of the street, but I wouldn't go making my own rules about what's a fair trade.

This is a good news/bad news kind of post. The good news is we received the large post card, and a letter from Advanced. I called to set up the service, and more good news.....they delivered our toter and recycling toter before the first pickup Jan. 4. More good news, picked up garbage and recycling Jan. 4. Bad news....missed our entire road for collection last week. Emailed them Saturday. Called us yesterday. Good news! Picked up our garbage this morning. even though our collection day was Friday! Maybe, just maybe they are starting to get their act together. I know some townships, according to an article in the Times the other day said they have a week to get their act together or they're done.
I will give them credit for being responsive to customer complaints.

Municipalities get together and bid the trash service because it is a lot cheaper when they get every house on the street. They can also make it mandatory that you have trash service, as it is mandatory that you have service for human waste (toilets). The Boro of Gettysburg switched to IESI and they sent me bills for places (served by dumpsters), as trash service is mandatory in the boro. I called and told them hey dumpster next door, paid by me and they said no problem. You should also find out all the extras that come with that service. Old tires, large item pick up etc. is all included in the bid price as the townships ( thanks Bicky Redman for helping on this) do not want a bunch of roadside dumps.

I'll be damned! Tires is on the list for bulk pick up. It doesn't say how many, but, I would have never guessed that! I guess I'll stop burning them now!

My new trashcan's here! My new trashcan's here! Now I'm SOMEBODY! Is it a round, blue one about 3 ft tall? I thought that was supposed to be the new recycling container. I hope they are not charging a monthly fee as WM did. That's why I purchased my own 55 gal can.

Nothing I like better than trash talking. The recycling containers are usually given out for free, and here in Parks country they gave us the big toters free for our recyclables. Bragging I know, but any of you folks on Parks give em a call they will drop it off, free, no rent, Just like Venter, I am now somebody!!!God, I love trash talking.
