So, once again in the Times, there is word of some sort of "Regional" Police Force between Cumberland Township and the Gettysburg Borough. You already know how I feel about this shit, but... - What are your thoughts about this merger?
- Is it possible for an equitable arrangement to be formed with this Borough?
- Shouldn't Straban and Mt. Joy be invited into this flustercluck?
- Will I be invited to be on the Committee?

I've said this before, if a regional police force saved Cumberland money, I am all for it! But, I believe the result would be both budgets combined and operating costs rise accordingly.

If it's like a proposal a few years ago in my township for PART TIME coverage, the majority feel that the State Police do enough and provide enough protection. So, when someone is breaking into your house in the middle of the night plan on at least an hour wait till someone gets there. Unless, that is, you've inferred that you've taken care of the problem yourself.

In a related event: Does anyone have any comment on this story? I want to hear from you all before I weigh in. From the Gettysburg Times

"... when two of the teens were confronted in an alley... "
To me, that statement says it all. The threat, if any, was over by the time the shooter left his house. This is not self-defense.

Before moving here, our county in NJ went to a regional police force. Granted, the county seat was the main source of crime, but they were able to reduce a lot of duplicate effort. It's still a work in progress even after two years and I'm sure that there will always be some that pine for 'the good old days'

Anyone else want to weigh in? BTW Venter, on that point I agree. The shooter can, and probably will be charged for the shooting. I do believe he was just trying to scare them, not kill them. Poor judgement to be sure. He is fortunate that the injury wasn't more serious, VERY fortunate. On the other hand, I don't think the kids should be held blameless in this incident. Sure, kids ringing a doorbell may be a harmless prank, IF you are living in the past about thirty years! Today, if someone is ringing my doorbell at 2 in the morning my first thought wouldn't be "Those darn kids !!!!!!!" As innocent as their intentions may have been they also showed poor judgement, and at the least I think they should be charged with disturbing the peace. At any rate, I think they both learned a valuable lesson and hopefully some parental "guidance" will be delivered to make sure it doesn't happen again.

On the original topic of this thread, does either Straban or Mt. Joy have any police? I thought neither of them did. If that's the case, there's no sense involving them in police merger talks.

My township didn't have any police coverage either, what the supervisors were proposing was part-time coverage from another municipality. I was at the meeting and they actually did a straw count of all the people present (a packed house). The "state police is enough coverage" won the vote. While I applaud the actions of the supervisors who voted according to the will of the constituents, I believe that those who voted were short sighted and only looked at $$, rather than the bigger picture of safety and response time to incidents. I'm not sure if it's still the case, but at that time there was only one officer at night at the state police barracks in all of Adams County. If he happened to be on the eastern side of the county and you are on the western end, sorry for your luck. If done correctly, I think I would support a regional police force in our area. It would provide an extra layer of security along with the state police.

Anon, That's exactly why they should be included. Who do you think responds to their calls at the Giant or the WalMart when the Staties are busy - or just to get coverage faster? Yes, Cumberland and Borough Police will be there. If you are sharing our resources, then pay a share.

I’m not sure, but I think there is still a bill in the state to make municipalities who use the State Police as primary coverage for that service. As I recall the fee is based on the population and the amount of coverage. Should the municipality have part time coverage, they will not pay as much as those who depend on the PSP 24/7.
I my self don’t think it is fair for a few townships to get 24/7 coverage from the state police at no charge, while some municipalities pay their police departments as well as paying to support the PSP.

Fred Snyder wrote in his column last week that it's 'no surprise' the police negotiations failed.
Every time President Birkner or John Butterfield stated that talks were 'moving forward' and there was a 'cooperative dialogue' was apparently a lie.
Watch the ACTV coverage of last month's council meeting. New board member Scot Pitzer asks Butterfield when the regionalization committee met last. Butterfield coughs and cannot answer the question.
