I just have no desire to be involved in any way on Facebook and don't want to be missing out on half of the posts. Leaves me no choice but to 'retire' from the Vent. Take care folks. See you around town.

Getysbg, While I understand your concerns, I can't fully understand the reasoning. I admit, I used to hate Facebook. I still think it's a clunky means of getting information. But, it is a great means of connecting with people whom you'd otherwise not normally communicate. Like Borovent.com, the Gettysburg Facebook Group is just a bunch of neighbors speaking over the fence... there's just s shitload more fences. I'd bet that you had some concerns when you first joined BoroVENT - and since you didn't trust your instincts then, why begin now? You, I, and many others, would have missed out on a friendship born out of some strange kindred forged in BoroVENT. You don't HAVE to participate on the FB site, but you can still read it. Like anything else on the internet, don't click on any links I'd hate to lose your insight and your humor. Gene

Just curious why some of you don't want to sign up for the Facebook site? I most likely will use an alter identity when I join. It is a way to maintain a sense of anonymity just like here. I like the idea of maintaining both sites but I also understand what a pain in the ass that can be. For either site I believe it will be a place where our opinions are noticed. Malware, random leaks of security, lack of desire to see other peoples' constant "let me tell you the answer to questions you didn't ask", a distaste for the originator of the site, a lack of honesty on their part about information that they share, so-called "friends" posting inappropriate things on your wall, or whatever it might be called now, constant format changes ... I'm sure there's more than that. I think the whole site is filty and reading it lowers IQs and makes people want to compete at stupid things that aren't worth worrying about.

I don't know enough about facebook to know, but presume there's not a guest login to view content on there without signing in? There have been things people sent me in the past that they thought *i had to see* but they came with a facebook login page when I clicked on the link, and I never saw them.
I understand the dynamics if it costs money to keep BV going, though, and it would be free on facebook.
As a "no longer in town" person, BV could get along fine without my crabbing and nitpicking!!!

It's not so much about the money anymore, but it is nice to have a broader audience. And Davew, as with Getysbg, your insight is always welcome here.

One does not have to join Facebook to read comments posted on a Group site. I am not a friend - as an example - of the Gettysburg Eddie's group but I can view all posts there. Groups are public while personal profiles can be limited to friends, etc.
I take exception to the site being called filthy. I have met people from Oregon, Texas, Nevada, Maine, etc. and have become fond of many of the strangers who are now friends. I've been invited to visit several of them. I've met artists, writers, highly intelligent people and people as dumb as I.
Filthy is a matter of perspective. Perhaps mine is skewed because the posts most offensive to me are political rants from left to right and in between as well as stories and photos of abused animals. That's the nature of a public site.

The people on it are not filty. The site, its ownership, it's lack of honesty at the outset - that's filthy.
I also had a FB page for a little while (I guess I technically still do, but I haven't logged in for a year or two, and even when I had it, I logged in rarely)...and the think that disgusted me the most was people who I hadn't seen in 10 years who thought that I just really needed to hear their political opinion.
I delinked or whatever you'd call it every person who did that after a while. Some of my relatives still like to do that, I don't see it but my wife rolls her eyes and tells me what they're saying.
Like I said above, it's getting an answer to a question you didn't ask, and that's something that really irks me.
Of course, that has nothing to do with BV because we all know on here we're going to get everyones' opinions on here, but we all also know pretty well what stuff to talk about. There isn't anyone coming on here plugging the site up with pictures of their aunts kids and a trip they took to the horse rectum museum today in their new minivan with theater seating - that they have to tell you every detail about. You know?
I also never get anything on my wall telling me ____ just did something in farmville and they may "need my help". I'm sure farmville isn't popular anymore, but I'll bet something else (or a lot of somethings) has taken it's place.

Thanks for the explanation davew. I understand what you mean about Zuckerman or whoever he is. The advertisements are annoying and so are the game requests.
I used to re-post political items I found amusing from both left and right but it always started a discussion which annoyed me so I rarely do that any longer.
I say things there that I wouldn't dream of saying here because my friends usually don't pay attention anyway or they laugh their heads off at the stupid things I admit doing. However, there are friends I don't see who like to keep up with information about my mother and I do post the state of her health for them.
I have to admit that the best part of Facebook for me is Jigsaw World. I like jigsaws, these are online so the cats can't jump on them and they keep me entertained. Farmville is there; I tried it a few years ago and everything fell to pieces - I just couldn't grasp the concept of that game.
What you say makes sense and if I had something to do outside of the home I might not rely on FB so much. But, I think I mentioned before that I'm a 24/7 caretaker for my mother and have been since April 2013. I like the distraction FB provides.
Hope to see you here if Venter keeps BV open.

To me, Facebook is like being at a Party, or being in a Bar... except with Benefits. - While on Facebook, when you say something stupid, you usually won't get punched.
- On Facebook, when someone Else says something stupid, you can't punch them (I don't really know if that's a good thing, or a bad thing)
- Often, at a Saloon or Party, you can't walk away from a particularly annoying conversation - but, on Facebook, you can choose to ignore Matt
Fortunately, you can catch up with these people, on your own terms, at your own time, in your skivvies, or when there's 24" of snow outside. Bars Close, and Parties End... but UN-fortunately, Facebook is ALWAYS ON!

See you around town. John Newbold I would like nothing better than to enjoy your posts on Facebook, and here. WTH, just make one under your wife's name, or your dog . One word of caution, however. STAY AWAY FROM THE CANDY CRUSH! Highly addictive!
