Just wanted to share the letter that I sent into the PA gaming control board. Though I could not have ShopLocalBuyLocal.com endorse the casino because I don't know the views of all the businesses on the site, and I don't want any more of the members getting harassing phone calls, I thought I could endorse it as an individual. I still owned the bakery at the time I wrote the letter which is why I refer to it in the letter.

I, Jeremy Schaffner, former owner of Seasons Bakery and Cafe in downtown Gettysburg and creator of ShopLocalBuyLocal.com, am writing you in support of a potential economic boost for the area and an opportunity to attract out of state money. Organizations such as Main Street Gettysburg, whose mission is to assist small
businesses, have been widely unsuccessful as many small businesses have recently closed up shop. Main Street Gettysburg's two major projects have been the David Wills House, and the Freedom Transit bus system, both of which, rely on the trickle down
effect. Main Street Gettysburg's thinking is that if they continue to pump money into these larger projects, people will eventually come downtown. However, reality tells the Gettysburg business community that the trickle down effect does not work.
This is why the “Buy Adams” program, which was unveiled by the Mason Dixon Resort, has been very encouraging for small businesses during a time of economic uncertainty. The Buy Adams program goes directly to businesses for goods and
services. This direct approach will give small businesses in the area the economic boost they need to keep their doors open and offer the potential to expand and flourish. That opportunity is not here for us now. An opportunity to contract with a project of this
scale could make a small businesses' entire year, and keep their doors open in an economic downturn.
Mr. LeVan should be commended for making a commitment to shop locally for goods and services. As a private entity, it is not his fiscal responsibility to do so, and Mason Dixon could easily go with the “top down” corporate approach and hire large outside companies to run every facet of the proposed resort. In fact, this very same
approach was recently taken by the Gettysburg National Military Park's new visitors center. A large corporation handles the food service in the center, while a company out of Chicago runs the bookstore. This directly undermines local businesses by offering
goods and services that visitors would otherwise have to come downtown for. Again Mr. LeVan should be commended for his commitment to do something most other entities,
with the power to do so, have failed to do.
Again I fully endorse the proposed Mason Dixon Resort and Casino, to be located at the present Eisenhower Inn and Conference Center in Cumberland Township.
Sincerely,
Jeremy Schaffner
