Very interesting website. But I'm not quite sure what I need to "decide" on?

Hmmm, I know absolutely nothing about farming, but I do have some friends that are farmers. From what I've been told, the costs of operating even a small farm are astronomical. In this day and age, the average farmer wouldn't be able to make a living after paying out for herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers, feed, etc every year. And God forbid they have a poor crop. I guess there needs to be some sort of incentive to farm, such as making a livable income. That's where the subsidies come into play. Even then, the average farmer lives just a hair above the poverty level... at least that's what I've been told. I suppose, that if we want to eat, we need to continue subsidizing farming. We'd be in pretty deep doo-doo if all the farmers said "screw it, I'm tired of bustin' my ass and still living in poverty. I'm gonna find a job where I can make a livable income". Personally, I give farmers alot of credit, because I wouldn't do it! With that said, YES, I think farm subsidies are money well spent.

I myself have no problems assisting the small farmer to stay in business. But I don't like the idea of supporting the bigger farm industries. They are big business and just like any other big business have to take their chances. I also don't like the idea of paying farmers not to grow crops. That is bull, let them grow corn or wheat or what ever, if they produce enough that the price goes down for the consumer fine. If for some reason not enough is produced and the price goes up, so be it.

Perfectly said FMB. I could never figure out why the government pays some farmers not to grow crops. You'd think we could export it somewhere in the world if we didn't need it. Russia exports millions of tons of wheat to other countries. Why not get a piece of that action? Doesn't make much sense to me.

Russia exports millions of tons of wheat to other countries. Why not get a piece of that action? Doesn't make much sense to me. My grandfather was a dairy farmer, very small. The size of the farm that is. It was 100 acres and I don't think he ever had over 30 head of cattle. He milked two times a day every day, and got to sell every drop of milk. But one of the much larger farms close by was paid more than market price to dump far more than grand dad was producing, so they could keep the price up. Doesn't make any sense to me. He had a couple of years that they paid him not to produce corn, again to keep the price up. And being a good American he did what the government ask of him. Then when he needed to purchase corn for his animals, he had to pay more to that big farmer than he got from the government for not producing his own. We do a very good job of looking out for and helping the big producers be it farmers or businesses, but don't do the same thing for the small businessman of farmer.

I guess one of the options is to sell all of the farmland to developers!?
What are the options? If we want to keep farmers on the land, I suppose there need to be incentives and assistance.
That is about $1,151,004 per YEAR, divided by 282 Farms, or $4,081 per farm, per year - average. That doesn't sound like too bad of an investment to me. But what do I know about farming?

I'm tired of farms disappearing. If subsidies keep the farms going I'm all for it.

If the farm is selling his commodities to feed humans it is good but i will always hate growing food and using it for only for fuel it is a terrible practice when people are starving .Also farms sell to most mills who make feed for animals we as humans eat so therefor we feed humans with it and if this changes we will see an astronomical price increase in food so you do the math the small help we give the family farm in this area is always money well spent and since i work for AG COM i do know just a little about the farmers that farm in the area .The most important thing to always remember is , DON'T TALK BAD ABOUT THE FARMERS WITH YOUR MOUTH FULL .

The byproduct that's left after the process , is also used to make feed (it's called distillers and it smells amazing ) so i guess that's a double perk . ;D
