I am just posting the question to see if any of you have ideas. My friend who lives in a small, but well developed rural area, has a neighbor who has suddenly decided to pick on them after going though most of the others in that rural patch of land. Their dog went to the bathroom in this guys woods (yes woods, not near his home or a child plaY area) and the guy has threatened to shoot the dog. This is not someplace where he frequents and the dog does not make a habit of the behavior,( However this man wants blood), To the point of saying he would hunt the dog on the dog's property. Any ideas?

call the local piza shop and have 20 pizza's delivered to his house. Extra large, with at least 3 toppings ;D Actually this sounds like the kind of guy you have to be careful with. It sounds like he could easily go off the deep end and really do something dangerous. You have to be very careful with him so you don’t push him into escalating this into a real battle. I’m not sure if calling the police about the threat to kill the dog would be good, or if it may escalate things. Maybe your friend should start with talking to the other neighbors who have also had problems and find out what worked for them and what didn’t.

Fubardx3, I would first see if the Police have any records on this person that would lead THEM to think that it could escalate. I would definitely see what efforts the other neighbors have made in dealing with him.
Is he old and senile, or just young and pissy?
I know that there are rules regarding dogs, but in these rural areas, our dogs usually get to go out on their own, and usually stay within their own boundaries. But once in awhile, our Lab roams. I'm sure he causes no more litter than the deer, foxes, skunks, bears, birds, etc., but for some reason, people go crazy about their little slice of land.
He probably WILL try to kill the dog is he sees it, but he'll probably try something worse first, like poisoning or trapping it
Aren't neighbors fun? The very first thing my next door neighbors said over 8 years ago, was to my kids (10 & 12 at the time),"Don't moo the cows!"
Nice, huh? THAT sure set the tone. Welcome to the country.

LOL, venter let me guess the first thing they did was moo at the cows? Telling a kid that seems like you almost want them to. I know hat my kid would have any way.
My pizza thing was a joke in case no one got that obv they should be calling the local police and second making sure they keep the dog under control. The last thing you want to do is give a person like this a reason to be even some what just. Even though he is being hars about this we all do have a responsibility to keep our pets under control and in our own yards. I had a problem wih my own dog, one of the neighbors came to talk with me about it and I could tell he was upset. The first thing I said was hold on a second here, I'm sorry and your right she shouldnt have loose, was any thing damaged cause I will pay for it. He immedatly calmed down and we resolved it.
If he does the kill the dog it won't end well for him either as people have gone to jail for animal creulty for killing domesticated animals out of spite. Def get the local police involved though atleast then there was a record of a possible problem BEFORE anything happens to help with their side of the case if something does happen.
Obv I don't this guy but usualy when people threaten a pet owner with killing the pet cause it keeps commingin thier year they usually just want you to keep the pet in your yard and think they can scare you into controlling your animal better.

Me thinks your friend should keep their dog off of his property. Yeah the guy is a jerk, but it is HIS property.

I kick my dogs ass when he goes onto someone elses property and I would expect the same from my neighbors and I don't care what anyone says it's my dog and if he does something wrong he will be disciplined. Hard ass I am but I want to be treated by my neighbors as I treat them with respect.
I do agree with checking with the other neighbors to see what problems they had with this person then take the next step by contacting the PD if thats what it takes to get him off thier back. Some people forget they had pets before and what they do.

Thanks for all the replys. It it a woodsy area where one property line ends and another starts is not a "in your face" kind of this has to be a case of boordom, their other dog ran free for years and the people are not new to the area. We all think of the pizza thing first, I don't know why. Perhaps it is something we grew up seeing on TV shows. The deed would never be done, though it is a pleasant thought .
