I was preparing to finalize my retirement papers when I was advised that for at least 6-8 months after retirement I will - hopefully - receive about 80% of my estimated retirement income. In other words, about half or less of my current income. Reason - they're behind in processing paper work.
Not that anyone will notice but I'm taking a break to mull my future plans. I have to review and revise the budget I prepared in August, maybe dump the computer, get rid of Mom's car, etc. I don't believe that a part-time job will supplement my income enough to get out of the GBSOTFFR so plans are in order.
So long folks.

Spitz, I logged into BV out of habit this AM so I have to respond to you. I don’t think I’ve ever bragged about my employment. It’s all matter of fact - I show up, do my work and leave. I’ve learned things I never wanted to know and I definitely do not like or trust the government. If I can figure out how to determine my social security benefits online (people tell me it’s easy) I may be able to get out of here. With windfall something or other I’m not entitled to full benefits but I’ll take $100.00 or so. That website is so confusing and you know that I’m not too bright. I can’t go to the office in person because I don’t have the leave needed to take a day off work. The worst thing right now is that I’ve gotten myself so stressed that I can barely breathe. It’s totally ridiculous. I think I understand how animals feel when they chew off a foot to escape from a trap.

FT, you'll get more than $100.00 but it will be less than your full benefit if you wait until 65 or whatever it is you need to retire now. From what I understand in my situation it would be more beneficial for me to take an earlier retirement and get a part time job to supplement that loss. My worst problem is the loss of medical insurance if I retire before I am eligible for Medicare. I couldn't afford the rates for a private insurance, if I could find someone who would cover me at all with my "preexisting" conditions. Or, just go without insurance which is something I would really have to think long and hard about. So for right now I'm hanging in there and seeing where this whole health care thing takes us.

Okay, for those few (you know who you are) who care, I've tracked down some info which helped me decide to proceed with retirement.
It seems that the annuity computation which I received in August is the amount of annuity I will receive until the NFC completes their audit of my years of service in 6-8 months. After the audit is completed I may receive more or less money. I didn't bother to ask questions about that because there is no answer.
I was also referred to OPM (Office of Personnel Management) to confirm that information. After several minutes of pressing numbers I selected the "retirement information" number only to be told that employees are not trained to answer retirement questions. Okay, fine.
This weekend (with some encouragement from a friend) I am going to attempt to apply for SS online. I'm retiring for my Mom so that I can take her on day trips and to the Fenton Art Glass factory in West Virgina. With my luck she'll be tired of me hanging around within a month.

I'm surprised (or am I?) that you cannot find information through your employer or HR department concerning your retirement.

If I hadn't received an acceptable answer my next step was going to be to contact Rep. Moul to see if his office could help. It seems that "going congressional" is the way to get action and I was ready to do so.
January 31, 2012 (which will be my 29th anniversary with the Commission) is my last day of full-time employment...at my present workplace. As long as I can take care of Mom, the dog and the cats all is good.
Just a note about SS - fed wages have been frozen as has SS so I see no reason to wait a few more years for a few more dollars. I'm not that hungry for money and I have a check out date in mind. That's sort of a joke but maybe not.

FT, Moul would be of no help but Todd Platts is the US representative and should be able to get you some results.
I am surprised your commission doesn’t have a more active HR department. I started my moved from no plans to retirement in a matter of about three weeks. On my first visit they gave me a conservative estimate of what my retirement would be. I made two other visits and each time the estimates were a bit higher but still conservative.
I was told that my first check would be about 50 % of the final and would remain there until OPM had done a final calculation and then all would be made up with one check and my retirements checks would be constant.
They lied to me. My first check was about 60% of the final, with the second check being about 80% and they stayed there for about three more checks. I got my first full check about six months into retirement and within two weeks a big check making up all the difference.
The only problem I had was that they didn’t want to give me credit for my military time that I purchased. Even though I sent copies of everything they wanted they questioned it, till I finally had to get the military records center to send me a certified copy of information, and then we got it all straightened out.
Although your gross income will be considerably less look at the money you will not need to spend. You will no longer have to purchase your lunches there, and no more gas bills for driving to work. You may also be able to get a reduced insurance since you will not be driving to work every day. And if you are a union member, no more union dues. And since your income will be slightly less, you may be taxed at a lower rate.

And since your income will be slightly less, you may be taxed at a lower rate. Now I'm back to fear. I guess that - since OMB won't talk to me - I'll call Todd Platts. I have to know the truth. I can't walk out that door and receive 50% of the final. That won't even amount to one paycheck. Nor will 60% or 80%. I need the annuity amount promised me. We do not have HR in Gettysburg. We must call or visit headquarters in DC. I don't believe that in 27 1/2 years here I've eaten out more than a dozen times. I pack my lunch. My car insurance will reduce. When I lived on Hanover St. and Buford Ave. I was within 2 miles of work. Now my round trip is 8 miles. I quit the union years ago after...well, you wouldn't believe it if I told you.

Sheesh, I am sorry they are making this so difficult for you. You deserve to go out on your own terms with the dignity that you have earned with all those years of service.
Have you taken the retirement course that the gov't has? I have heard that is the ONLY decent training they offer... As long as you are hitting the your House Rep, I say contact Casey and Toomey too! This is total BS and you deserve better! I already shared with you my thoughts on governemt HR pondscum...
Hopefully everything will come together in the end and on your schedule... West VA will be great!
