Caught the article in the Merchandiser (p 5, July 25) about disposal of a broken CFL bulb. The steps are quite a bit more involved than just sweeping up the broken glass--got to vacate the room, air it out (for several hours), turn off HVAC (also for several hours), use cardboard, sticky tape, a glass jar with lid wet paper towels--all to protect you and others from the mercury vapors and residue. (BTW, do not use a vacuum--spreads the vapors.) And the bottom line--follow local ordinances on disposal--some localities have specific ordinances as to how, where, and when. (We don't in AC.) These CFL bulbs are the same ones that--to my fading eyes--emit less lumens and take longer to turn on and light up. How did we get to this condition where the "traditional" bulb can no longer be manufactured and in the process we allow harmful mercury vapors to endanger our homes? Use common sense--who knows what was outlined above and who is going to take the time and effort to do the "necesssary" clean up but in the failure to do so, endangers all involved?

I would LOVE to see the "Mercury Lobby". I didn't realize it was powerful enough to require another method of introducing Mercury into our Homes.
Mercury in thermometers... umm, Nope! Shit! Mercury in Tooth Fillings... busted! Shit! Mercury in Fish... oops, caught that one too. Shit! I know! Mercury in Light Bulbs! What better way to introduce this Poison in a manner that will ENSURE that the people will INHALE the Vapors!!!
Placing a Poisonous Gas into Frail Glass Containers! People have to juggle an OLD glass container, while trying to hold onto the NEW, hard to hold globule, while balancing on a chair - IN THE DARK of course, the fuckin' light blew - remember?
Genius!
And I always thought "The Mercury Project" was just about Space Exploration.

By the way, I just replaced TWO CFL Bulbs this past week.
Of course I disposed of them in a proper manner. They weren't busted when they left MY property!

Who allowed the Canadian Football League to get into the lightbulb business anyway? Canucks

Have you tried one of these in your daughter's Easy Bake Oven yet? My brownies took three days to dry to an edible slab of goo.

Apparently I did everything wrong when a CFL bulb fell out of the cupboard and broke on the floor. I used a dust pan to gather the shards, a wet paper towel to wipe the remaining mess and I tossed everything into the trash. Worked for me!

I have yet to encounter a broken one. However, when I do, I will dispose of it pretty much the same way as Honey Badger did. I might throw the remaining mess in a ziploc bag if I have enough left in the box.
In my house, they throw off more lumens than traditional bulbs did. With every room have 1 or 2 ceiling fans in it or 4 light chandelier they've been a huge cost cutter on the monthly bill. I have about 90 bulbs in the house and it seems to be the kids sole mission to have all 90 on at the same time when nobody is home. a few years ago, when Met-Ed was only charging 5.5 cents/kwh my bill was cut almost in half. Now that I'm paying 10.8 cents/kwh I'm back to where it was 4 years ago. I hate to see what it would be like with traditional bulbs.

Granted, there is an energy savings. But, we could also use LED Lights to light things up brightly and cheaply.
I know that the light emanating from LED is relatively directional, but I'm sure that the engineers in the good ol' USA can figure out some reflecting remedies. Hell, if they can blind us with those goddamned headlights, they can figure out house lighting.

Well, I had one burn out last night and I dropped it and it broke. I blame borovent. Anyway, I swept up the shards and I'm waiting until tomorrow night to throw them away when it's trash night. I'm thinking about throwing the shards in my neighbors can once he puts it out at the end of the driveway. He's a Prius driving eco-weenie who yells at me that I'm destroying the earth by driving a pick up truck.
