Please excuse me for not posting this earlier in the day, but I just didn’t have time.
Today (May 29th) would have been the birthday of Leslie Townes Hope, known to most of us as Bob Hope.
He was born on this date in 1903 in England. He was a vaudevillian, actor, singer, dancer and author. But best now to most of us as a USO entertainer who entertained the troops for 46 years. He made over 57 tours for the USO entertaining troop around the world in peace and war.
For years he made his Christmas Tour, entertaining troops who were overseas and away from their friends and families. He solicited the help of so many other big name entertainers to help those young men and woman forget, if just for a few hours where they were, and what was going on around them.
Although born in England, Mr. Hope was an American and any “GI” who saw one of his shows will never forget him. I had the pleasure of seeing one of his shows, but I was so far away that I couldn’t tell Mr. Hope from Ann Margaret. But for a few minutes I forgot all that was going on around me and where I was for that two hours.
Christmas just hasn’t been the same since he quit his tours, but I know he is entertaining the “troops” where he is now, and although I am in no hurry to see his show again, I do look forward to it. I know he always has a big audience.
THANK YOU MISTER HOPE FOR ALL YOU HAVE DONE FOR THE MILITARY TO KEEP THEIR MORAL UP IN VERY DIFFICULT TIMES.
