FT, regretfully, I don’t scan the obituaries for these men and women, the information I get is through various veterans organizations when they are notified of the need for an honor guard. Although they are authorized, not all veterans request military honors at their funerals or memorial services so I probably will not find out about them. Please this is not my thread, anyone with information on the passing of a veteran, please post it here for all to know. And if I may be so bold, I don't think they need to be local, everyone who has served this country needs to be recognized. These men and women should be recognized and remembered for their service. If you can’t get to the funeral or services, think of them and their families for a moment in your daily prayers. A thank you to any and all that read these and I do thank you for thinking of these brave men and woman. I couldn't agree more FMB. I don't know all of the people that you mention in your posts, or those I read about in the paper. I do know that some of these people spent the end of their time here on earth in ways that did not reflect the respect and honor these heroes deserved. Thank you for helping to make them matter. Another thing to think of LS is that these men and woman walk among us unnoticed. I recently heard of one of our local WWII vets who passed. I saw his picture and remember often seeing him in town, and probably said hello to him a few times. He seamed to be a nice guy but didn’t appear to be anyone special. In talking with men who know him from one of the clubs, he was a WW II vet, he went ashore in France the day after D-Day, and fought is way across Europe, and was even part of the occupational forces. He had been awarded two Purple Hearts and a Silver Star. I probably saw this fella two or three times a month and didn’t know any of these things about him. Had I known I would have bought him a beer or two or a couple of cups of just for the pleasure of talking to him and listening to any experiences he would care to share with me. But those stories are gone now. But another interesting thing was told to me by a VA worker once. “The closer they were to the front the less they talk about it.”

I loved it Bill! Keep on greasin' that Bobcat ;D What an honor for that young man and he took it all in stride. I liked the part when they told him he had to be on the phone at a certain time and be prepared to wait for two hours, and he said "that aint gonna happen, I got work to do, if you can call around 12, I'll arrange my lunch time." When you watch it you can't help but to be proud of this young man and his generation.

Captain Lester Jay Stone, U.S. Navy (Ret.), Stone attended the United States Naval Academy Preparatory School, San Diego, Calif., and then, in 1930, was admitted to the United States Naval Academy as a midshipman, graduating in 1934. He earned his naval aviator "wings" three years later.
Stone witnessed the U.S.S. Shaw explode during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor and conversely, he witnessed the Japanese surrender at Kyushu. He later commanded the Naval Air Facility at Opama to help the Japanese rebuild their air force. He was awarded The Order of the Sacred Treasure by the Emperor of Japan; an honor rarely afforded a foreigner.
As the executive officer of the carrier Sicily, he saw action in the Korean War. Stone was also Commander of the Naval Air Station, Memphis, Tenn., and Inspector General of the Navy. His career in the Navy encompassed 30 years of innovation and contributions to the development of carrier aviation. The results are still employed by today's Naval, Army, and Air Force pilots. Stone was decorated with the Bronze Star.
