Bill, Once again, thanks for updating this Topic. It's one of our only redeeming forums on BoroVENT Questions though: - The information on the Veterans... Does it come from the families, or what?
- Is it ever verified through some "Military Source"?
I only ask, because my Dad's "Stories" from WWII sounded like they were anecdotes from Reader's Digest. I wish he had been more forthcoming with the real events he went through, but he pretty much kept the War to himself. I'm sure he's not alone in that respect, but we were not allowed into that part of his life. He never wrote about it, although he said he would when he got his computer. I don't know anything about him besides he was involved in the "European Campaign" and part of the "Battle of the Bulge" (the Black Forest? comes to mind).
He's gone now, and all we have are his dismissal papers to show his participation in History.
I'd URGE you, and other Veterans to SHARE their stories with their Families when they ask. It may seem trivial to you, but sometime in the future it may make a world of difference to the next generations. You don't NEED to have been a "HERO", or embellish your participation. We know that Soldiers are Humans, and it would have been nice to know how you all coped in the traumatic, character-building portions of your lives when you were away from us.
With that said, remember that some people may not want you all to "drone on about your exploits in the war", but when asked, please share. I suppose the first question, from kids especially, is "Did you shoot anyone?", or even "Did you kill anyone?"
Of course, that's a very personal question to deal with, and you should be ready for a proper response according to the person asking the question. And be Honest about it, we don't need to hear the Reader's Digest version.
Knowing about my Dad's participation (or lack of) would have been a bit easier to interpret his life in general from that perspective.

By the way, one of the things Dad would refer to was that his " WWII records were destroyed in a fire" at the place the records were kept by the Military. What does that refer to, and were they lost?

Venter, the information I provide is from the notification given the Honor Guard by the funeral home. This information is on the DD-214 (discharge papers) for the veteran. It is a standard question for the directors to first ask if the deceased is a veteran, and then to ask if the family would like military honors. If he/she is a veteran the director needs to make a copy of the DD-214 so they can request the flag for the casket, and to apply for either a headstone, or a small amount the VA will allow toward a headstone. The DD-214 is a one or two page document that provides much information. It will have of course the name of the individual, their birth date, date of enlistment, service number, social security number, date of current rank (this is most likely a promotion date, but could possibly be a reduction in rank).. It will also list the location where this action was taken, and list the MOS(s) (military occupational specialty), and any awards or decorations authorized. It will also have a section that identifies the date of discharge, and how much time total in years, months and days, and the amount of overseas time in years months and dates. For more accurate information such as date and time in rank for each grade, various post assigned, including a complete record of every post, and assignment including the dates reported aboard, and departed. This record will also include any judicial action as well as special assignments. It will include all activities such as scores on any type of test taken, firing range qualification scores (every one), and if in combat every military action the individual took part in. For example, my DD-214 is only one page, however my service record is almost 50 pages. And no judicial actions against me. And yes there was a fire at the National Personnel Records Center, St. Louis MO in 1973. At that time 80% of the Army records for personnel discharged between November 1, 1912 and January 1, 1960 and 75% of the Air Force records for people discharged between September 25, 1947 and January 1, 1964 with names alphabetically after Hubbard, James E. I do hope this helps to answer some of your questions.
