I'm not sure that I was the start of the bashing on this place, but, I guess my post helped the cause. I don't think I'd normally pay all that much attention to signage (sorry Venter), but, in this cause I simply couldn't help noticing it. Thus, my post. Now, the signage issue won't stop me from trying the place out, the tourists will take care of that for me, but, I can't help but be a little bit skeptical after seeing their "curb appeal". I'll reserved judgement on the place after I try it, if it is still open next winter after the tourists leave.

Word of mouth and great food may help to attract the locals but I think that many visitors will pass them by because of the lack of curb appeal. However, some visitors looking for a good meal may see a packed parking lot and think hmmmm....this might be a pretty good place to eat. Of course, on the other side of the coin, if you can build a loyal local base then you don't have to worry how your business will fare in the off season. Every time that I go into the Blue and Gray I see many familiar faces. I believe they have a local base that will support their business. If their food is as delicious as it looks on their Facebook site it will be worth the trip. Now, I'm off my soapbox until I actually try the place out for myself.

Lifesaver made a good point here - someone is trying to start a business on a shoestring. Since we're always saying that we need to build local businesses, here's a chance for us to TRY the place, also, let that owner know that we appreciate his efforts ( if they are as good as that report ) and that we're part of Borovent. Those of us in a position to do so, could offer advice - perhaps Mr. Blonde could explain to the owner about the funds available from Main Street Gettysburg, maybe Venter could offer a low cost sign to get him through to when he could afford a real sign. Perhaps there is someone who could offer advice on that dismal appearance of the dining room. FMB could offer a ton of ideas to attract locals which is what he will need to get through the winter months. We'll try it for breakfast on Friday morning... "... maybe Venter could offer a low cost sign to get him through to when he could afford a real sign."
The day I stopped by and left my card with a worker, they had the boards and letters laying on the floor of the place, and they had just removed the driveway signs (that's when we noticed them doing stuff). I'm sure by this time, especially after this Topic, I'd have a great chance at getting their business There are a few short-term solutions for "inexpensive" signage, but I would usually suggest that a business just bite the bullet. If you pay for a "temporary banner or sign", you should just save that money and apply it to a permanent sign. It may be 2-3-4 times more expensive, but you are not throwing away the initial investment. With that said, it is sometimes necessary to put up a temporary sign, and that's usually due to time restraints causes by waiting 'til the last minute to contact the Sign Man. I don't believe that I have knocked this particular business, or business owner, and without re-reading everything I've posted in this Topic, I may be wrong about that. (My negative comments were in regards to the former Hibachi owners screwing me)If it sounded like that, then I do apologize. My Main Intent was to point out how important I believe it is to attract the right traffic to ANY business. It will be an uphill battle for a business to overcome tripping out of the gate. You may be surprised at how far I will go to ensure that a customer gets more than they pay for. And... a "Cheap Sign" doesn't have to be an Ugly Sign - and an "Expensive Sign" isn't always a Nice Sign. I could point a few of those out to you. I'm sure I'll try out the Steinwehr Bistro too. If I like it, you'll know. If I don't like it - you won't see a bad review from me. That's just my policy on local business and BoroVENT.

OK - we went Friday morning. Would definitely go again but here are some tips for the owners:
1.- You have a speaker system - play some CD's!! When you are the only people in there eating, it gets boring 2.- The omelet was great!! But that potato hash is really corned beef hash. Some home fries - please! 3.- An itemized check please - not just an amount 4.- Temperatures - Omelet was great, but the toast, the hash and most of all, coffee, were warm at best. 5.- And speaking of coffee, larger mugs, not china cups, And refills!
The food is worth a second try. Do some work on that ding room. Locals such as us want you to succeed!

I'm not upset just because they didn't get a sign from me. I'm more upset by the insult to the town and their neighbors when a business present itself like that in a tourist town. I'm usually driving south when I pass them and the sign catches my eye every time - but not in good way. One can't help but think that they put the sign up in 15 minutes with a few letters from Home Depot. But today I happened to be driving north (the way most tourists will first see it) and I noticed something else. They ran out of Ws so the one in STEINWEHR is actually an upside-down M. Now THAT's classy!

Steinwehr Bistro changing name and cuisine"The family had initially opened the restaurant last year as a Chinese Hibachi buffet, Candy said, but then realized that they were "competing with ourselves" with their successful restaurant 'Li's Buffet' in downtown Gettysburg."

The story is missing the part where the Steinwehr Bistro lasted all of two weeks. Half of that crew bolted back to Maryland and the Li's took over the restaurant once again.

Time to tear it down and put a new chain in there.

Time to tear it down and put a new chain in there. Just what we need, another chain. /sarcasm. And F that. Give me a mom and pop/independent place 7 days a week and twice on Sundays over the cookie cutter garbage food pedalling chains.

While I agree that it should not become another chain, it IS in an old Hardee's Building. If there was an effort to modify the appearance from Steinwehr, then it may stand a chance. Most Mom&Pop's don't have the resources to do that. I've mentioned "Signature Buildings" before - you know it's a McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's, or KFC, even if you never see a sign. It's tough to "Un-Remember" that this is a fast food building.

By the way, I don't know if it has been mentioned yet, but the restaurant building that formerly held "Spiritfields" and "J's" (or whatever it was), is being renovated.
It is the one by the Travelodge on Baltimore Street as you come into town. It's going to become a Subway restaurant.

I'm all for supporting mom and pop businesses but there are also some darn good chain food resturaunts out these days allot of which are private owned.

Our definition of privately owned is vastly different. Pardon me, what I guess I meant was I don't always feel like subs, bar food or pizza. Bar food, well it's okay sometimes. Subs eh? Pizza well lets be honest there are a hundred pizza joints in a mile radius of me. I like a pizza here and there but heck is one pizza joint really any better? That's kind of why people are going to the big chain places the local owned bars, pubs and family restaurants are so much the same it's ridiculous. No one strives to come up with anything new it's all the same old same old for the most part.
