There's nothing wrong with supporting Mom and Pop business's and franchises Who said there was anything wrong with it?

Pardon me, what I guess I meant was I don't always feel like subs, bar food or pizza. Bar food, well it's okay sometimes. Subs eh? Pizza well lets be honest there are a hundred pizza joints in a mile radius of me. I like a pizza here and there but heck is one pizza joint really any better? That's kind of why people are going to the big chain places the local owned bars, pubs and family restaurants are so much the same it's ridiculous. No one strives to come up with anything new it's all the same old same old for the most part. You can't be serious with this post, you just can't be. I'm with Blonde on this one. The REASON people go to the Franchise Restaurants is EXACTLY THE OPPOSITE of what you claim! They go to McDonald's and Olive Garden because all of the food WILL BE the SAME Whether it is bland, or fantastic, it should be the same if you eat in PA or FL. If you don't get the same "Quality" at Papa John's or Dominoes, heads will roll. If you want a real Pizza though, you would venture out to Deliso's, LaBella, Tommy's, Mamma Ventura, or Pizza House. Essentially it's "safe", and the same-old-same-old. No adventure, no surprises. "Vanilla please". But... when you go to any "Maria's Restaurant", don't expect the same meals.

I agree Venter. When at home, or close by I usually eat at the non-franchise/chain establishments. When I am hungry for something, there is a place that will have it the way I like it. I have a place for each of my favorite meals. I only visit the local franchise places when I am in a hurry because most of them provide quicker service and let me get in and out quickly.
When I travel I will stop at the franchise places, not necessarily because I like the food, but I know what to expect.

I wasn't really talking about chains as in Mcd's, Hardee's, Friendly's etc... Olive garden I think changes their menu every so often at least according to their TV ad's (Most chains do) I don't eat there much. I was more comparing to the bigger more well known franchises ( such as the ones you go to on a weekend night and wait for an hour to get a seat if you don't call ahead) The convo I thought was about why people are fading away from local mom and pop's and going to the food chains. I think allot of it is people feel like it's a little better experience than going to xxxx ( I won't name specific places as to not insult local owner's) They get the experience of a "nice" meal more so than a pub, pizza/ Italian or friendly's type of place. Like I said there just isn't much to making a pizza or fried pickles. I think most people now a day's look at those places as more of a place to grab dinner quick on a Tuesday night after a long day and not feeling like cooking. If we do eat local it's usually Blue and Grey or the Beer place Niles took us to a year or so ago and if we are in the mood for pizza/ subs we usually go to Franks. Imo he makes one of the better pies around, his subs are good as well his grilled chicken salads. Everything else in Gburg is either not that great or the same old IMO. Even the chains in Gburg suck. Some might not agree but from what I see many other's are like me and would much more prefer long horn or melting pot than a dime a dozen pub or pizza shop.

Mr. Blonde, it sounds like Spellchecker's comments hit a little close to home. Did you even read Venters post? He sums it up rather well. I know what I like, and I know what I'm looking for when I go out to eat whether it be local or when I'm traveling. Have you ever watched Diners, Drive Ins and Dives? If not you should, those types of independent establishments exist all over this country and they blow almost every chain out of the water.

Why are you comparing a steak house to a pizza shop? It's as if you think mom and pop pizza joints and pubs are they only type of independent restaurants out there. There are some good chains out there, and I'll eat at them every now and then, but I would rather seek out a good mom and pop or independent restaurant.

Agreed, Blonde. Many time a little out-of-the way diner or Mom and Pop café puts out the best darned home cooking there is! An example: Neptune Restaurant in Oneonta, NY. We pass thru that area frequently on our visitations to Vermont and Glens Falls. We almost always eat breakfast at the Neptune(best pancakes EVER!)and sometimes on return trip if time allows. Their lunches are wonderful and every detail is perfect at very reasonable prices. Service is quick and friendly, always. As for the flip side, I've never been disappointed at a Perkins or Shoneys, whatever the time of day. Lone Star and Texas Roadhouse, are also on my "good list" for an occasional catfish or steak dinner. But, I will prefer to cook my own of each of those at home, where I can create my own traditional meals. Places I frequented over the years in and around Gettysburg, in order of favorites, first being tops: Springhouse Tavern-Dobbin House, Farnsworth House, Gary Owen, Chubby's BBQ-Emmittsburg, Momma Ventura's-Gbg, Hoffbrau Haus- Abbottstown, Picketts Buffet, ABC, and Tommy's Pizza.

Blonde,
I wasn't comparing pizza shops per say I was comparing the bulk of mom pop type places around. Pubs and pizza joints..... and it was in response to your comment "Just what we need, another chain."
Personally I would like to see some of the better chains come to the area. I get sick of running to Frederick, Hagerstown or Baltimore every weekend to go out to dinner because I'm sick of the same old places. I'm not saying I don't like those places or never eat at them just that there is no one that stands out to me personally.

Mr. Blonde, it sounds like Spellchecker's comments hit a little close to home. Have you ever watched Diners, Drive Ins and Dives? If not you should, those types of independent establishments exist all over this country and they blow almost every chain out of the water. Those independent establishments featured on those shows are unique and creative places that stand out. That's my point about our local eateries. They don't stand out and they are far from unique. Which is why I find myself driving 45 minutes to an hour to go to a chilli's or an outback or whatever chain VS eating 10-20 minutes from home on the weekends. On the same hand we will turn around and be the same way with those types of places and wind up at the pike, blue and grey, montezuma's or Ernie's.

However, you couldn't pay me to drive 45-60minutes to eat a Chili's. There's some really good places to eat in those cities you're driving to that aren't chains and they're not that hard to find. I can give you a heads up on some if you want.

Does anyone else eat at Delisos? Lenny and Kathy are running a Mom and Pop business and their food is delicious. Of course, I'm biased because I'm very fond of the family but the food is great and so is the service.

Of course, I'm biased because I'm very fond of the family but the food is great and so is the service. Just ate there Saturday night. A while back I noticed their one long time employee wasn't there anymore. Much to my surprise I saw him at the new place in Bonneauville early last week.
